OK, it’s possible I’m overstating it. Regardless, one thing is clear – over the years, the field of Project Management has become bloated and “complicated for the sake of being complicated”…

With countless methodologies, tools, and certifications available, it’s easy to get bogged down in the complexities and lose sight of what’s truly important: getting the job done.

That’s where the Stupid Simple Manifesto comes in. We believe that project management doesn’t have to be an overcomplicated, jargon-filled nightmare.

By embracing the Stupid Simple philosophy, you can cut through the clutter, streamline your processes, and start enjoying the world of project management once again.

Keep it Simple

Complexity is the enemy of progress. Embrace simplicity in your processes, tools, and communication. Strip away the unnecessary layers and focus on what really matters: the project at hand.

Prioritize People Over Processes

Remember that people are the driving force behind any project. Focus on building strong relationships with your team members and stakeholders. Foster open communication, mutual trust, and respect. By prioritizing people over rigid processes, you create a more flexible and adaptable environment for success.

Every single organization has their own working norms, and most have their own unique project management process to follow. So no matter what you work, you’ll have to adapt to the way they manage their projects. One thing that’s inevitably identical across all organizations everywhere… the people drive the projects forward. Learn to manage the people, and the projects will be effortless.

Embrace agility (small “a” agile)

Change is inevitable. The ability to adapt and pivot is crucial to project success. Stay open to new ideas, feedback, and learning opportunities. Encourage your team to do the same.

Focus on Outcomes, Not Just Activities

It’s easy to get lost in the minutiae of project management. Don’t forget to keep your eye on the end goal – the desired outcome of your project. Align your team’s efforts towards achieving that outcome, rather than merely ticking off tasks on a to-do list. Some project managers get labeled as “box checkers” or even “paper PMs” because they may have a certification and a checklist to follow, but they can’t manage their way out of a damp paper bag. Don’t be one of those PMs.

Make Decisions with Confidence

In a world of information overload, making decisions can be daunting. Trust your expertise and experience, and don’t be afraid to make tough calls. Remember that inaction can be just as damaging as making the wrong decision. Good leaders gather facts AND opinions from their teams of experts, then take responsibility for making the decision.

Cut Through the Jargon

Project management is rife with buzzwords and jargon. While some terminology is necessary, it’s important not to get lost in the weeds. Communicate clearly and effectively, using language that everyone on your team can understand. And coach your team to pursue clarity in their communications, it’s the grease that keeps the project momentum going strong.

Learn from Failure

Mistakes are a natural part of the project management process. Embrace them as opportunities to learn and grow. Foster a culture of openness and support, where team members feel comfortable sharing their failures and learning from them together.

Celebrate Success

Recognize and celebrate your team’s achievements, both big and small. A little appreciation goes a long way in fostering motivation, morale, and a sense of accomplishment.

It’s a Mindset

The Stupid Simple Manifesto is more than just a set of guiding principles – it’s a mindset shift.

By embracing simplicity, adaptability, and a focus on people, you can transform the way you approach project management and achieve greater success with less stress.
